Giving Sellers the Power of Choice

Consumers have the right to choose how to sell their home — whether through a trusted professional or as “for sale by owner.”

We are leading the charge to change laws that will allow consumers to list their homes as for sale by owner or FSBO on all online platforms. While many homeowners turn to a trusted real estate professional to help sell their property, some homeowners want the freedom to explore selling their homes by themselves.

In addition to the challenge of industry rules that do not allow for different listing types to be seen in one place, there are some states that prohibit FSBOs to be on Zillow at all. For the past several years, interpretation of Wisconsin and Montana state laws prohibited homeowners from advertising their homes “for sale by owner” on Zillow and other real estate search platforms. Zillow championed a Montana law passed in 2023, restoring consumers’ ability to advertise their homes FSBO on these platforms. However, Wisconsin still prohibits the practice, which we’re working to change because we believe consumers should have the right to choose how to sell their homes.
